Dr. Susan Sutton, Senior Advisor for International Initiatives at Bryn Mawr College, and Emerita Associate Vice President of International Affairs and Chancellor’s Professor of Anthropology at Indiana University, USA, gave a remarkable lecture on “Strategic Planning for Comprehensive Institutional Internationalization” at PSU Hat Yai Campus on September 17, 2014. Our honorable guest was accompanied by Dr. Porntip Karnjananiyot, Executive Director of Fulbright Thailand; Mr. Nathanael Lynn, Public Diplomacy Officer, and Dr. Kanittha Navarat, Cultural Affairs Senior Specialist, both from the US Embassy in Bangkok.
This seminar, jointly organized by the US Embassy, Fulbright Thailand, and Thai Higher Education Commission, included several lectures on internationalization arranged at one university in three regions of the country: center, north and south. For Southern Thailand, PSU had the honor of being the host of this special event.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Pattara Aiyarak, Vice President for International Affairs, and PSU executive team, warmly welcomed our honorable guests. The seminar was attended by more than 60 academics and students from PSU, Walailak University, Songkhla Rajabhat University, and Rajamangala University of Technology Srivichaya.
During the presentation, Dr. Sutton emphasized on the importance for an organization to define clear goals and vision towards the internationalization process, as well as specific strategies to reach the goals. In her words, “Successful internationalization pursues broad goals rather than simply the numbers.” Another essential point was the necessity to assess and revise the internationalization progression.
After this exceptional lecture, participants had the chance to ask questions and learn even more from Dr. Sutton in terms of internationalization strategies and concrete examples from US universities’ organization.
